Interior Design

Cursos de un Año - Madrid

This course is a full introduction to Interior Design. It is a foundation aimed at those who wish to delve into the design of spaces and user experience: domestic, retail, public and private spaces, well-being, interactive design, ephemeral spaces, etc. During the year, we will work on a range of scales and spatial typologies, and all artistic, visual, conceptual, technical and projectual facets will be covered, through projects and participative workshops, which encompass all the essential subjects for the professional exercise of interior design.

The course uses a methodology based on professional activities, so that, around a projectual core, a number of key subjects are developed in this space design training. This structure makes it possible to learn by designing, and to train our students in design processes and cutting-edge digital and communication tools applied to interior design.

Additionally, each project is led by important working professionals, who guide our students through the design process and the methodology of a real interior design project.

The course is structured in three blocks spread over two semesters:

I.Design and creativity: Theoretical and practical knowledge of the foundations and references related to design, colour, form, visual and structural languages, perception of space, scale and volume through courses in conception, analysis and creativity such as the Basics of Design, History of Art and Design and Colour.

II.Project: Throughout the course projects and workshops will be carried out relating to space, the user and the experience, in which knowledge acquired in other subjects comes together. The projects are exercises for greater conceptual, technical and detail development, unlike the workshops, which are more intensive, creative and experimental.

III.Communication: Communication is the most important tool for transmitting an idea and explaining a project. It is for this reason that it is so important to teach the tools and certain techniques needed to represent and communicate the design of interiors: drawing, surveying and graphic design among others.

The course contents are organized around the seven areas of knowledge that reflect the CASE commitment of the School of Design at the IED Madrid: cultural commitment, environmental commitment, social commitment and economic commitment, which naturally introduce the concepts of sustainability and entrepreneurship in the training programme.

These areas are:

Culture
We understand IED Designers as agents for change around them, as ambassadors of design. To do so, the Cultural Area, as a pillar of our CASE Commitment, trains IED designers in humanistic contents that promote a complex analytical view.

Communication
When promoting a design and trying to convince customers, a good communication strategy is as important as creativity and innovation, and as technical and sustainable development. This area prepares the IED Designer to prepare and communicate his or her work from the very first year. Also, we help them create a portfolio which becomes the IED passport for our designers in the professional realm.

Projects
This is the backbone of our project. The School of Design at the IED Madrid uses the methodology of Learning by Designing to train IED Designers and this is the approach that underlies all projects and sets the tone of the training. Within this area, there are two separate spaces: academic projects and possible collaborations with institutions projects, businesses and competitions, to name just a few, all of which contribute to the students’ portfolio.

Science and Technology
The IED Designer also develops his or her capacity for innovation in the use and application of materials in their design. In addition, the School of Design at the IED Madrid promotes the training of students in the latest digital tools, such as Virtual Reality, and the most innovative technology, through its FabLab.

Representation techniques
This area enables students in expression techniques for application in the design process and project communication.

Companies
As another of the key foundations of the CASE Commitment, the Companies area trains IED Designers in Strategic Design, honing their entrepreneurial capacity from day one, working on methodologies of creativity and innovation applied to new business models.

Sustainability
We train IED Designers to face each design from an environmentally sustainable perspective, teaching them design strategies that are naturally incorporated into the design process.
